How much can you actually earn?
Realistic hourly rates for UK users on legitimate platforms:
- £3–£10/hour on traditional survey panels (YouGov, Ipsos, Toluna)
- £6–£15/hour on research platforms like Prolific, where studies are longer but pay better
- £0–£3/hour on survey apps like Qmee and AttaPoll, where the volume is lower
- £0/hour when you get screened out — which happens on roughly 30–50% of survey attempts
Anyone promising £500 a month is either selling something or lying. The honest number is £20–£80 a month for a user who checks two or three platforms regularly.
The best UK survey platforms
Based on current activity, review volume, and payment reliability, these are the platforms worth your time:
Prolific — best pay per hour
Academic and market research studies from universities and companies. Studies typically pay £5–£15/hour, sometimes more. No minimum PayPal withdrawal. If you can only use one platform, use this one. See our Prolific vs YouGov comparison.
YouGov — most frequent surveys
One of the largest UK panels. Survey volume is high but the payout threshold is £50, which takes months to reach. Best as a background platform you check occasionally.
Toluna — highest review volume
Over 250,000 Trustpilot reviews at 4.2/5. Points convert to PayPal or gift cards. Strong UK presence.
Ipsos i-Say — established panel
From the global research firm Ipsos. Surveys pay £5+ in cash or vouchers. Reliable but not the highest-paying.
Qmee — lowest threshold
One of the lowest PayPal thresholds on the market — you can withdraw a few pence. The trade-off is that survey volume is lower and screen-outs are common.
See the full list in our Paid Surveys directory, sorted by trust score.
How much time do you need?
Most successful users spend 15–30 minutes a day. That's enough to catch the surveys worth doing without wasting hours on screen-outs.
The worst approach is to sign up for ten platforms and try to check them all. You'll burn out within a week and earn less than you would from one focused platform. Pick one or two and commit to them.
Payment methods and thresholds
The main payout options on UK platforms:
- PayPal — most common. Thresholds range from £0 (Prolific) to £50 (YouGov)
- Bank transfer — used by some panels. Slower but no PayPal fees
- Gift cards — Amazon, Tesco, John Lewis. Often credited instantly
- Charity donation — some platforms let you donate earnings instead
See our full list of UK survey sites that pay via PayPal, with current thresholds.
Do you pay tax on survey earnings?
Yes, technically. HMRC treats survey income as taxable, but the £1,000 trading allowance means most casual users don't need to declare anything. If you earn less than £1,000 in a tax year from surveys and similar activities, you don't need to file.

Red flags to avoid
Legitimate survey sites never:
- Ask for money to join or unlock withdrawals
- Promise specific earnings amounts
- Require you to recruit other people to get paid
- Ask for your bank login details or wallet seed phrase
If any site does any of those things, it's a scam. See our guide to paid survey scams.
The realistic verdict
Paid surveys are worth doing if you treat them as a hobby, not a job. They pay £20–£80 a month for regular users. They're not going to replace income. But compared to every other low-effort method — faucets, PTC, watch-to-earn — they pay 10–100× more per hour.
If you're going to spend 20 minutes a day earning online, spend it on surveys. Start with Prolific and add one or two panels from our directory.
